My article – Mr. Shavit Hakimi
This year I teach three grades "The Book of Shoftim" – Judges.
We finished last week the stories of Gideon that was the 5th judge. The stories took place on 3 chapters and the students were so excited with the material. I especially enjoyed from one part when I taught them about "The licking test". Now little bit introduction: Gideon had 32,000 soldiers with him in the war against Midian. G-d wanted Gideon to send many of them home, because G-d wanted that people will understand that the victory was connected to G-d, and if there will be many soldiers, people could think that they won because of themselves. Gideon said that if you afraid you can leave, so 22,000 soldiers left. But G-d still didn’t want the quantity and told Gideon to do "The licking test". Gideon needed to take the 10,000 soldiers to a spring and let them drink. If they will knell and drink directly from the water – they are out. So 9700 did it and G-d told Gideon that with them he will win the war. I was surprised to see how fast they found the problem here – how this kind of test can tell me who is a good soldier and whose not? I told them that there are 5 answers for this question. It was really amazing to see how each one of the student try to find the reason for the test. The thing that surprised me the most was that they found the hardest and the difficult reason first and then the obvious. To emphasize the answers I made a circle in the class and told them that this is the spring. I chose this size because I asked them if they sow a real natural spring in their life, and those who said yes decided on this size. Now I asked them to divide into 2 groups: one who drinks directly from the spring and the other drinks with their hands. I made sure that they remember that there were 10,000 soldiers who wanted to drink. They realized that when you take a place next to spring and drink, you actually don’t think about your friend that is very thirsty and waiting for you to finish. Second, when you drink directly from the water you cant see your back or your friend's back. Third, if you pick up the water with your hands, you can actually see if there are germs and warms. It means that you are observing person, and this is a very good qualify for a soldier ext...
You can see in the picture how much fun they had from this experience, and I enjoyed also from the fact that they learned a lot from it.
These days we are working on a play "Gideon Adventures". The purpose is to take the most interesting scenes from the three chapters, and let others see the beauty.
